Agentic AI refers to AI software — typically built on large language models — that can plan, reason, and take multi-step actions autonomously. Unlike a simple chatbot that answers questions, an agentic AI might browse the web, write and execute code, send emails, query databases, book appointments, or interact with external APIs without human involvement at every step. Unique to agentic systems. An AI agent may pursue its goal in ways its designers never intended or predicted. Structural risk
Arises in multi-agent architectures, which are increasingly common as organisations deploy AI orchestration platforms. A failure or compromise in one agent can propagate across the entire system. The guidance specifically calls out prompt injection as a structural risk: malicious instructions embedded in content an agent reads — a webpage, an email, a document, a database entry — can hijack the agent's actions, directing it to take unauthorised steps that affect other connected agents or external systems. Accountability risk
The most challenging to manage after the fact. Agentic systems make decisions through processes that are difficult to inspect, and generate logs that are hard to parse into a coherent sequence of events. Organisations need audit mechanisms designed specifically for agentic workflows — not conventional system logs adapted post-hoc — and need to establish those mechanisms before an incident, not after. Zero trust, defence-in-depth, least privilege, and continuous monitoring are not new concepts — what is new is their application to software that acts rather than software that serves. Existing frameworks remain valid; they require deliberate extension, not replacement.
For organisations assessed against the Essential Eight, the most relevant adjustments involve application control and multi-factor authentication for the systems AI agents connect to. Even if an agent's own authentication is well-configured, the underlying systems it accesses should maintain independent access controls rather than trusting the agent by default. An AI agent's identity should not function as a backdoor into systems that human users can only reach through MFA-enforced logins. If your human employees are required to authenticate with a second factor to access payroll data, but your AI assistant can reach the same data through an OAuth connection you granted eighteen months ago, that represents an inconsistency worth closing.
Network segmentation deserves attention in multi-agent architectures.
